7029 1965-12-12 Gloucester Horton Road
Peter Kerslake says "Just a few weeks before its official withdrawal date of 31 December 1965 "Clun Castle" is in steam at its home shed of Gloucester Horton Road, by now the last remaining "Castle" in operational service and fitted with a replacement front numberplate, whereabouts of the original unknown!
It looks well here, but 1965 had been a busy year for 7029 with a Steam Special working virtually every one of the last months of that year, By now it was past its best, with scheduled passenger services from Gloucester to Cardiff, Swindon and Cheltenham being worked as well as the occasional freight duty.
A noteable 1965 working for 7029 had been the last returning Summer Services scheduled Saturday holiday special, the 12.30p.m. from Penzance to Wolverhampton, which 7029 worked northwards from Bristol Temple Meads on the final Saturday of the Summer timetable on 4 September 1965.
In the run up to Christmas 1965 "Clun Castle" was recorded by myself acting as station pilot at Gloucester Eastgate and despite an official withdrawal date of 31 December 7029 has been recorded as working the 5p.m. from Gloucester to Cheltenham on the 1 January, 1966.
The new year saw 7029 go to Tyseley for overhaul and restoration".
