Peter Kerslake says " 5054 Earl of Ducie just two months after the epic run on the final leg of the Ian Allan Special of the 9th May when it ran from Bristol Temple Meads to Paddingon, just failing to achieve the hoped for 100 m.p.h. between Swindon and Reading.
One of the best maintained "Castles" left in service at that time 5054 was shedded at Worcester until September 1964 when, like many other "Castles" it spent its last months at Gloucester's Horton Road depot, being withdrawn from there in October 1964."
