5098 1963c Shrewsbury
V93 was the 0905 Liverpool - Plymouth.
Peter Kerslake says "Newton Abbot depot had a longstanding reputation for keeping its allocation of "Castles" in fine condition, and 5098 "Clifford Catle" seen here in the year following her transfer from "down the line" at Plymouth's Laira depot to Newton Abbot looks well turned out here at Shrewsbury.
5098 had been a favourite in her earlier years at Laira, regularly working down to Penzance on the "Cornish Riviera" as well as being regularly entrusted to Top Link passenger duties from Plymouth to Paddington.
Newton Abbot shared these "West to North" duties with Shrewsbury depot, their footplate men together with their "Castles" and "Counties" which were the regular performers working just between Newton Abbot and here at Shrewsbury, workings northwards being the responsibility of Midland Region crews and locomotives, whilst workings westwards of Newton Abbot were rostered to local crews and engines.
Following her brief spell at Newton Abbot 5098 was sent to Carmarthen, Llanelly, Old Oak Common and finally to Reading from where she was withdrawn in June of 1964."
