5057 1954c Bristol

The Down Cornishman.

Peter Kerslake says "Both members of the footplate crew are determined to get into the picture here at Bristol Temple Meads in the mid 'fifties with their nicely cleaned 5057 "Earl Waldegrave" rostered on the down "Cornishman", the Wolverhampton to Penzance service, running via Stratford on Avon and Cheltenham, with a 9:15 a.m. departure from Wolverhampton and a 5:55 p.m. booked arrival time at Penzance.
The tops of some of the ornate Temple Meads buildings are visible on the left with a load of freight being handled from a fitted parcels duty over on the far platform, whilst the same thing is taking place here on the "Cornishman".

The " 825" Reporting Number together with the later design of "Cornishman" headboard both certainly look to be new, and 5057, being a Bath Road engine, has undoubtably relieved the locomotive from Wolverhampton here at Bristol but her fireman still needs to add the second lamp to the buffer beam top, with his engine could well now be rostered to run right through to Penzance and would not be replaced at either Newton Abbot or Plymouth."
