4079 1964-05-09 Reading West

No 4079 Pendennis Castle has just passed Reading West with the Ian Allan Paddington to Plymouth train on May 9, 1964.
Sadly Pendennis Castle only made it as far as Westbury before its firebars burnt through, depositing red hot embers on its trailing axleboxes.
By a twist of fate, however, that mishap probably saved the engine from being cut up at Swindon as after languishing at Westbury M.P.D. it was purchased and survived into a second life, initially in Australia and then back in the UK thanks to the Great Western Society at Didcot.
