4098 1959-06-25 Rattery

Down express

Newton Abbot shed's 4098 " Kidwelly Castle " appears to be making light work of the climb to Dainton summit in this view , with no steam loss , but her load is light and well within the eight coach limit for an unassisted " Castle " on the South Devon banks down to Plymouth.
There is very little exhaust from her chimney which seems to point to it being a warm day , and look how well all the banks have been cut back, so very different to today !

Records show that 4098 " Kidwelly Castle " was allocated to Newton Abbot at the date of this view and is seen here climbing Rattery bank on a down working to Plymouth .
Whilst Rattery is somewhat of a lengthy slog westwards it is not as steep as either Hemerdon or Dainton and 4098's load looks to be well within the limit for an unassisted " Castle " over these banks , so no pilot engine has come on at Newton Abbot .
