4083 1950s Teignmouth
With working 417 including a postal van heading the train.
Looking pretty grubby here , 4083 , " Abbotsbury Castle " a Wolverhampton Stafford Road engine rather unusually carries a Midland Region headboard in this view.
The train is probably from Wolverhampton and Birmingham , and 4083 has had a long run down from her home at Wolverhampton via Stratford on Avon and Cheltenham , and would not have been replaced at Bristol Temple Meads , but the engine will almost certainly come off at Newton Abbot....this was why we enthusiasts down in Plymouth had to go to Newton Abbot so see any such " foreign " locomotives as they vary rarely worked past Newton Abbot on these duties.
With Sprey Point in the background 4083 " Abbotsbury Castle " heads along the sea wall and approaches Teignmouth with a down working from the Bristol line , probably an early morning duty.
If that is a Travelling Post Office leading the formation it will doubtless be the one which had been worked just as far as Bristol the previous afternoon in the 3.45.p.m. " North Mail " from Plymouth, and is now being returned to Plymouth North Road in readiness for this afternoon's run back up to Bristol Temple Meads again .
4083 was allocated to Wolverhampton Stafford Road , moving to Newton Abbot and Exeter between 1958 and late 1960 before a final move to Cardiff Canton in September 1961 , being condemned from there at the end of that year .
