With a couple of Cordon Gas wagons in their siding (charging?) and the roof of a Iron Mink. A Collet Goods is messing about with ECS.
This is a really good portrait of Newton Abbot Depot's 5078 " Beaufort " setting out from Hereford on a " West to North " working and I think that the Reporting Number denotes a southbound working , quite possibly the 9.10.a.m. from Liverpool to Plymouth , in which case 5078 will have come on to this duty at Shrewsbury and will work through back home to Newton Abbot via the Severn Tunnel and Bristol .
Reporting Numbers were constantly changing , however , and it might possibly be a similar northbound duty with 5078 heading from Devonshire to Shrewsbury , these workings being shared in both directions by Shrewsbury and Newton Abbot engines and footplate crews with " Castles " being the customary choice , although Shrewsbury Depot often put one of their " Counties " on a southbound working .
In mid 1961 " Beaufort " was reallocated to Neath Motive Power Depot, a long way from its former Devon home , and had the distinction later that same year of being the last " Castle " to be fitted with a double chimney , the engine being withdrawn in Novemberof 1962
