5058 1961 Laira

5058 1961 Laira

One of Laira Depot's allocation of " Castles " , 5058 " Earl of Clancarty " had been at Laira for most of her working life until transfer , like so many of her class in their last months in service , to Gloucester in September of 1961 from where she was condemned in March of 1963 .
Named " Newport Castle " from being newly built , 5058 was renamed " Earl of Clancarty " in September of 1937 when she received the nameplates previously allocated to one of the " Dukedogs " , the difference in the radius of the nameplate itself and lower edge of its mounting plate being clearly evident in this view . ,
With the " Dukedogs " having had smaller driving wheels when compared to the " Castles " it was necessary for Swindon to modify the nameplates for fitment to those " Castles " to which they were transferred.
In her glory days at Laira 5058 was widely used on passenger workings to Paddington as well as running down to Penzance , often on the " Cornish Riviera " express .
