5096 1964 Cardiff East Dock
Looking pretty folorn here at Cardiff , probably not long before going to Morriston at Swansea for disposal by Cohens Scrapyard there , 5096 " Bridgwater Castle " looks as though some work was in the process of being undertaken before the engine was condemnd , when all such work would have been halted.A Bristol Bath Road engine in happier times , 5096 has had her vacuum pipe and inside valve covers removed , and her safey valve bonnet has gone as have her nameplates and cabside numberplates, whilst her chimney is covered by sacking indicating that she's been stored out of use in the open somewhere. It was often the case that work was underway at a Depot when a locomotive was included in a withdrawals list and such work was accordingly brought to a halt as would seem to be the case here with 5096 " Bridgwater Castle " apparently mid way through having her valves seen to at Cardiff East Docck Depot in 1964 .a Bristol Bath Road engine for much of her working life 5096 spent some time at Cardiff's Canton Depot , moving across to East Dock when Canton closed to steam , but my records also show that she was at Worcester from April 1964 and was actually condemned from there in June of 1964.
