5054 1960s Carmarthen
Cardiff Canton's "Castles" were usually turned out rather smartly, but 5054 "Earl of Ducie" looks rather less presentable than does the young lady strolling down the platform here at Carmarthen in her brightly coloured dress .It was not all bad news for 5054, however, as on the 9th. May 1964 whilst allocated to Worcester she was one of the "Castles" selected for the "Great Western" Special and took that train on the final leg of its journey back to Paddington from Bristol in fine style, just missing the one hundred mile an hour maximum which had been hoped for. Folllowing that epic run 5054 ended up, as did a number of the surviving "Castles", at Gloucester's Horton Road Depot from where she was condemned in October of 1964.
