4081 1959-06 Rattery Bank

A number of the members of the first batch of " Castles " were given a new lease of life in their late years when some where outshopped from Swindon Works with improved draughting , mechanical lubicators and new inside cylinder blocks , but 4081 , " Warwick Castle " looks to be in her original condition in this shot on the Down Cornishman and still has her original inside cylinder block with its distinctive curved top sides.A Landore based engine in the early ' fifties 4081 appears to have the eight coach maximum load for an unassisted " Castle " over the South Devon banks between Newton Abbot and Plymouth , possibly even more , and she's losing some steam from her inside cylinders but there isn't much exhaust steam so perhaps it's a hot dayand I seem to recall that this working involved a run right through to Penzance with the locomotive coming on at Bristol Temple Meads from where it relieved a Wolverhampton Stafford Road engine
