5065 1956-02-25 Bath Spa
On Down Merchant Venturer
Overcoats and scarves are the order of the day for the awaiting passengers and snow lies on the tracks with the month being recorded as February of 1956, a bitterly cold and wintry month I still recall when the " Kings " were all taken out of service for investigation of cracks which had been discovered in a number of their bogies, with "Castles" being pressed into service in order to cover many of the principal "King" rostered duties, and with Midland Region "Duchess" and "Princess Royal" engines on loan to Old Oak Common that month in order to help out as well.
5065, "Newport Castle" has paused here at Bath Spa at the head of the down 11.15 .a.m. "Merchant Venturer" from Paddington to Bristol Temple Meads, the only booked stop on this working, the engine being rostered to return to the Capital on the afternoon 4.15.p.m. "Bristolian" from Temple Meads.
Allocated to Old Oak Common at this date , 5065 was withdrawn in January of 1963.
