5011 1950s Bristol Bath Road
An advantage for the many enthusiasts at Bristol in the ' fifties was that from the western end of the platforms at Temple Meads a fine and unobscured view across to the many sights on the adjacent Bath Road shed was possible , and in this view from the platform Newton Abbot's 5011 " Tintagel Castle " makes a fine sight , nicely prepared and ready probably for a run back down home to Devon.
A transfer in May of 1960 took the engine from Newton Abbot to Reading , followed five months later by a move to Old Oak Common from where it was condemned in September of 1962.
Note the original design of outside steam pipe and the curved top corners to the inside valve chest block which was so distinctive on the early " Castles " a design which was replaced in later years by the more conventional and less attractive squared block.
