5080 1950s Swansea High Street

5080 1950s Swansea High Street

This is how I shall remember High Street - always sunny!

Not much activity here at Swansea and time for an Inspector to have a chat with the crew on 5080 , " Defiant " , another of her class happily still with us today .
Following her withdrawal from Llanelly in April of 1963 the engine was rescued after ten years at Dai Woodham's at Barry in August of 1974 by the Birmingham Railway Musuem Trust , initially as a source of parts , and it was not until 1985 that the decision was eventually made at Tyseley to restore 5080 to main line order , the engine subsequently apppearing in its fully restored state on many Special workings from 1988 .
Due to its involvement in the restoration of its sister engine " Earl of Mount Edgcumbe " Tyseley was unable to again take back " Defiant " for its later overhaul in 2002 and the engine was accordingly sent to The Buckinghamshire Railway Centre from where it is today hoped to restore the engine once again to main line running order.
