5043 1966c Barry Docks
John Richards says "Not actually at Woodham's, although the loco made it's way there later, but on the storage roads which curved away from the 'main' line, behind the mineral wagons in the background here, where locos were kept until space was available at Dai's site. The large shed in the background is the Western Welsh bus garage, still extant. "
Peter kerslake adds "A nice study if a Castle double chimney. Happily , 5043 " Earl of Mount Edgcumbe " was saved from cutting up , and I suspect that this view is actually at Dai Woodham's yard at Barry , where the engine languished for ten years following withdrawal in December of 1963 until its rescue by the Birmingham Railway Museum in August of 1973.
Named after the Earl of the estate on the Cornish side of the River Tamar opposite Devonport , and although initially intended as a source of spare parts 5043 , was rebuilt at Tyseley and has subsequently put in some memorable performances on Steam Specials in recent times .
Formerly at Old Oak Common in the late ' fifties , 5043 was transferred down to Cardiff Canton in April of 1962 before its final move to Cardiff East Dock , when Canton closed to steam , in December , 1963 .
Lin Bryant tells us - "This is on one of the coal tip roads just east of Barry works, the buffers each side of the photo are of locos on the approach line to the tip, after discharging on to the ship the empty wagons were allowed to roll by gravity to the lower line where 5043 stands. The locos in the background are on the approach lines to a tip further along No. 1 dock. The large building in the right background was the Western Welsh bus depot in Barry, now in use as a base for preserved buses. "
