A fine picture of Landore shed's 4074, Caldicot Castle, displaying its 87E shedplate and in the customary well turned out condition so associated with that particular Depot, and especially its reputation for the manner in which its Castles were maintained. Built in December of 1923, the second true member of the class, 4074 is seen here with the later style of modified and squared inside valve chest, having lost its original with the curved top corners during an earlier overhaul at Swindon, but still retains the original style of valve spindle covers, characteristic of the rebuilds and early members of the class. A subsequent move to Old Oak Common preceded its withdrawal from there in May, 1963 after forty years of working express passenger duties, not a bad record for a stalwart such as this.

Records tell us that the second true "Castle " namely 4074 " Caldicot Castle " undertook a series of three trial runs on the orders of Mr . Collett when newly built in 1924 , those test runs from Swindon to Plymouth providing him with early confirmation as to the capabilities of his design .
Outward runs saw 4074 taking the Dynamometer Car and a formidable fourteen coach load as far as Taunton wher three coaches and the Car were removed , whilst at Newton Abbot a further three coaches were removed , leavng eight to be taken without a pilot engine by 4074 over the banks to Pllymouth.
