On a Paddington train 5037 ' Monmouth Castle'was the locomotive immortalised by the renowned artist the late Terence Cuneo in his splendid painting entiitled' Clear Road Ahead', depicting the footplate and enginemen heading an express away from Paddington. The artist was obliged to seat himself on the coal in the tender of 5037 in order to make his rough preparatory sketches for his final painting , no easy or comfortable task !
