5098 1963-04-07 Stafford Road
A splendid shot but so well portraying the dreadful air of neglect that was typical of the times, with one of Laira shed's former stalwarts in the shape of 5098, Clifford Castle now ending her days working to and from the West Midlands in common with so many of the remaining members of her class, and recorded on film in the rapidly deteriorating Stafford Road Motive Power Depot at Wolverhampton. Used by Laira on express passenger duties in her glory days to and from Paddington as well as to Penzance, often on the Cornish Riviera, 5098 had been the firstCastle to be completed following the end of the war, entering service in May 1946. When the Diesels came to the Westcountry 5098 went to Carmarthen, Llanelly and Old Oak Common before being withdrawn from Reading in June of 1964.
