Peter Kerslake says "Whilst not the newest of Newton Abbot's "Castles" 4037, "The South Wales Borderers" was certainly well regarded by the footplate crews at that Depot, working to Plymouth and regularly north to Bristol on express passenger workings. Usually very well turned out by its home shed 4037 looks a little uncared for in this particular view and appears to be crossing over from the Western end of St. David's station onto Exeter shed.
What is of interest in this shot is that the engine has lost its Regimental Crest from below the nameplate which was normally affixed to the middle splasher.
4037 went to Exeter on transfer from Newton Abbot in July 1962, being condemned just two months later".


Robert Trevelyan adds "I believe this was taken during the short time it was allocated to Exeter around 1962 and is on the down road having left the shed. It is possible 4037 is going to work an Exeter - Taunton train. The crests were removed by a member of staff at the shed, he later showed them to me before he handed them over to a senior railway official in 1965."
