A long standing resident of Wolverhampton Stafford Road Motive Power Depot, 5088 Llanthony Abbey must have been in the very last days of service here at Ruabon on 29th . September 1962 on a Birkenhead-Paddington service as my records all indicate that it was withdrawn that same month ! Rebuilt from a member of the Star class in February of 1939 this engine received its double chimney at Swindon Works in June of 1958, one of just three of that batch of rebuilt Stars to receive a double chimney. Note the fireman's prep water pipe in its characteristic position, used to keep the footplate clean and tidy, and also a means of damping down the coal in the tender to reduce coal dust.
