5069 1950s Exeter St Davids
Laira's Foreman has put one of his finest on the up'Royal Duchy" , taking over from the Cornish engine at Plymouth and departing at 2.p.m. from there and running through to Paddington , seen here at the brief halt at Exeter St.Davids. Certainly not in its customary fine external condition and unusually scruffy in this view, 5069 was often worked between Plymouth and Penzance in the 'fifties , often on the' Cornish Riviera' , and was one of Laira's' Castles' capable of being rostered on the Ocean Mail Boat Trains running between Plymouth's Millbay Dock and Paddington. This train was less heavily loaded than the later 4: 10 p.m. from Plymouth and 5069 has probably not been double headed to Newton Abbot over the South Devon banks.
