4079 1960s Newton Abbot

4079 1960s Newton Abbot

Shown as being at Newton Abbot with a "stopping passenger" lamp in position and amongst all the usual conditions of a steam shed in the 'sixties this view of "Pendennis Castle" has her looking to be in a run down condition, and may well date from when she was allocated to either Taunton or Bristol Bath Road.
Following a subsequent period stored out of use at Bristol St. Philips Marsh from March to June 1962 this famous engine then went to Swindon shed from where she was selected to work the high speed Special's first and hardest leg from Paddington to Plymouth on 9th. May , 1964.
A failure on the Special that day at Westbury, and her subsequent languishing on Westbury shed probably saved her from joining the many other "Castles" in a breaker's yard as private purchase , restoration and now a fortunate return home from Australia means that 4079's story has a happy ending.
