5061 1960 West Drayton
The photographer has captured 5061, "Earl of Birkenhead" in fine style here as it speeds through West Drayton on the Up "Capitals United Express", the very low camera angle highlighting the powerful lines of the "Castle" to full advantage in this imposing view. The train is on the UP fast (platform 2) West Drayton - as it still is today! The signals in the background are for the down slow junction for Staines and Uxbridge branches at the west end of the station.
5061 went from Reading shed to Cardiff Canton in December 1959, receiving its double chimney shown here in August 1958, before withdrawal in September, 1962. There's a nice clean Reporting Number although the Headboard is beginning to look a bit uncared for, and 5061 has got a pretty impressive load behind her tender on this Top Link working from Cardiff to Paddington.
