7028 5007 1958c Cardiff General
The 12.05 p.m. from Milford Haven in West Wales has Landore's 7028, " Cadbury Casle " at its head, the engine having been turned out in the customary fine style by that shed's cleaners who had a reputation for such things whilst a rather less sparkling 5007 , "Rougemont Castle", a Old Oak Common engine, comes through with an express parcels to complete this interesting picture here at Cardiff General. Records confirm 5007 was allocated 81A from February 1957 to February 1959 so this dates the photo a bit more accurately. Even the buffer heads on 7028 have received attention and a nice clean Reporting Number completes the image of a splendidly turned out engine, but that is what Landore was renowned for in those past times.
Landore's share of " Castles " increased from a total of sixteen in 1953 to twenty by the time it closed to steam in June of 1961 , the depot having a reputation for maintaning its fleet in pristine condition , even going as far as painting the buffer heads silver , the well known " trademark " of a Landore " Castle " .
Their principal role at Landore was to work eastwards to Paddington , and westwards to Swansea on Top Link passenger rosters, but when Landore closed its " Castles " were divided between Neath and Llanelly and with just one going to Old Oak Common .
7028 " Cadbury Castle " seen here went to Llanelly with eight of her sisters , and both Llanelly and Neath Depots thereafter continued to use their newly acquired " Castles " on their former passenger duties between Swansea and Carmarthen with a number still working to Paddington well into 1962 , often deputising for failed Hymek Diesels on the principal express rosters.
