5043 1962c Cardiff General
Welsh engine for much of its working life and allocated in the mid ' fifties to Carmarthen , 5043 , " Earl of Mount Edgcumbe " was moved to Old Oak Common in later years before a return to Wales in early 1962 , being at Cardiff Canton at the time of this photograph .
That looks like her driver taking a break on a conveniently parked porters' barrow with a youthful enthusiast keeping him company.
There is a formidable load for 5043 to handle , and if this is a Paddington bound working from further west then doubtless 5043 has come on here at Cardiff as a fresh engine with a fresh crew in order that both engine and crew can return back to Cardiff from Paddington on a later working that same day and following a turn round and brief stop over at Ranelagh Yard at Paddington .
Saved from Dai Woodham's at Barry following some ten years spent in the salt laden Welsh air , and after withdrawal in December of 1963 , 5043 was purchased in September of 1973 initially as a source of parts for 7029 " Clun Castle " , by then preserved , and was moved to Tyseley .
Fate took a hand thereafter , however , and in 1997 it was decided to restore 5043 to full working order for mainline duties , the engine subsequently reappearing in fully restored condition in October of 2008 , since when it has worked to perfection on a number of Enthusiasts' Specials , the most memorable being the two non stop runs of 17th. April 2010 between Paddington and Bristol on the revived " Bristolian " rosters of that day .
