4081 1962-04 Stoke Gifford
On the Capitals United ExpressWith the customary painted buffer heads which were characteristic of Landore based " Castles " their 4081 , " Warwick Castle " is at Stoke Gifford on the main South Wales to Paddington line , the site of extensive freight yards at this time but now the location of Bristol's Parkway station. In July of the year shown here 4081 went to Carmarthen before withdrawal in January , 1963
Splendidly turned out by Landore's shed staff as was their custom , 4081 " Warwick Castle " , in common with many of the early " Castles " , was given a new lease of life in the late ' fifties and early ' sixties when mechanical lubricators together with modified steam pipes ( as seen here ) and other refinements greatly enhanced their performance on main line express passenger duties before their untimely and premature withdrawal just a few short years later.
The fireman's " pep " pipe , used for damping down the tender of coal and keeping dust to a minimum as well as keeping the footplate clean , is in its usual and characteristic position hanging from his cabside window , and this working will have come through the Severn Tunnel prior to joining the main line here at Stoke Gifford , to the north of Bristol.
