4080 1960s Patchway
Allocated to Bristol Bath Road during the mid ' fifties , and possibly still a Bristol engine at the date of this view , 4080 " Powderham Castle " climbs the noticeable gradient from the Severn Tunnel at Patchway , and will now take the Badminton cut off line up to Paddington , thereby bypassing Bristol Temple Meads with the " Red Dragon " from Swansea and Cardiff. Cardiff Canton shed , responsible for the supply of the locomotive to this daily Top Link working , had for years past rostered one of its finest " Castles " to this duty , but by this date its initial allocation of five " Britannias " had been increased to fifteen , and a " Britannia " was very often seen on this particular duty, This is at the end of the three mile and one in one hundred gradient from Pilning , at the exit of the Severn Tunnel , to here at the approach to Patchway station, from where 4080 will leave the main line into Bristol and take the loop avoiding Patchway station itself before heading eastwards towards Stoke Gifford and Badminton , bound for Paddington. This came dated as 1959. But Chris Foren reminds me that the reporting number A35 suggests summer 1960 at the earliest.
