An interesting shot of 4037, "The South Wales Borderers" running light engine through Bristol Temple Meads in fine condition as was customary for this Newton Abbot based engine, one of that shed's best and favourites among footplate crews, and which was credited with the highest recorded mileage for any "Castle". Rebuilt from a "Star" at Swindon in June 1926, one of just two such rebuilds that year, this engine spent virtually all its working life at Newton Abbot and was kept in fine condition, working to and from Bristol as well as down to Plymouth, on a regular basis with main line passenger services.In its customary fine condition , 4037 " The South Wales Borderers " is running as light engine through Temple Meads with its driver watching out for a clear road ahead. The engine has most probably come off its working here and is now going over to Bath Road shed. Allocated for many years to Newton Abbot , where it was highly regarded by the crews , 4037 would work down to Plymouth from time to time , but was often rostered on duties which would take it to Bristol and beyond , principally on " West to North " rosters and Wolverhampton line expresses before going to Exeter shed for just two months in July of 1962 , prior to its withdrawal. 4037 was unofficially credited with running the highest mileage for any " Castle " , with nearly two and a half million miles recorded , including those run in its original state and prior to its rebuild in 1926 from a " Star "
