This picture taken in around 1956 shows ‘Castle’ No.5070 Sir Daniel Gooch assisted by a ‘Dukedog’ 4-4-0, the pilot being positioned at the front of the train engine in traditional Great Western fashion. The Stafford Road ‘Castle’ and its train have just emerged from Hockley No.1 Tunnel and are passing the 1909-vintage North Signalbox. On the right against the ‘Toad’ brake van is a GWR diagram DC4 ‘Cordon’ gas tank wagon used to transport gas for carriage lighting and restaurant car cooking purposes.
