5076 1962-08-29 Leamington Spa

‘Castle’ No.5076 Gladiator on 29th August 1962 about to depart from Leamington Spa on the ‘1O46’ Saturdays Only express, the 10.31am from Birmingham Snow Hill to Hastings. The train consists of Southern Region green liveried coaches marked with set number ‘541’. No.5076 was originally named Drysllwyn Castle but was renamed in January 1941 after the World War Two Gloucester Gladiator biplane. It was allocated to Reading from March 1960 until May 1963 and was paired with a Hawksworth tender during a Heavy Intermediate overhaul completed in May 1962.

Ed Purcell remembers -"This loco was virtually a daily visitor to Snow Hill when it was based at Reading and appeared to be the loco of choice for the trains working through to the southern. It was always well kept. The driver invited two of us up on the footplate of the southbound train at Snow Hill one day in 1963 and the train was delayed so we had about 20 minutes on board!"
