5084 1960s Newton Abbot

5084 1960s Newton Abbot

The driver oils around while waiting on the through road with the Kensington milk train 5084 , " Reading Abbey " , complete with unsightly mechanical lubricator reservoir on its smokebox side would have doubtless had a pilot engine to assist over the South Devon banks from Plymouth to here at Newton Abbot but it has come off here and 5084 will now work forward on her own. The afternoon milk train from Penzance to Kensington was always heavily loaded, and picked up additional fully filled milk wagons on its path through Cornwall and Devon , particularly at Totnes , at the very foot of Dainton bank where there was an important creamery attracting milk supplies for the Capital from a wide area of Devon farmland . There's a nicely filled tender of coal , and there will be more milk to add as they head eastwards. The early " Castles " , including those rebuilt from " Stars " such as 5084 seen here , were given an extended lease of life in their late years as they passed through Swindon Works .
