5055 1956-08-22 Paignton
Although this appears to be the Kingswear bound "Down" working of the "Torbay Express" it is just a local. There is a full load of coal in the tender and there appears to be only 3 or 4 coaches (the gates are closed behind the train).
Engines on the down "Torbay Express" worked right through from Paddington to Kingswear, often running back to Newton Abbot tender first on a later local stopping service or even freight. Engines for the Paddington bound service would be sent down the line from Newton Abbot on whatever duty required an engine, being turned on Kingswear's turntable ready for the fast run up to Paddington. This is what is shown here, 5055 is on a local passenger (despite the headlamps and headboard) heading for Kingswear to collect its train for Paddington.
The train number is for the Up working of the Torbay Express. The engine usually took a local down from Newton about 9.00am hence the PBV in the train.
