5050, "Earl of St. Germans", a Shrewsbury engine in happier times has been cut in half here at Coopers ' Metals, a small breakers' yard at Sharpness and shows clearly the construction of the inside cylinder block, and the many tubes in the boiler plate.
5040, "Stokesay Castle ", a former Old Oak Common engine in days past behind has not yet reached such an advanced stage of destruction, whilst 4087 "Cardigan Castle" still remains virtually intact.
Many of the engines shown here were sold on by Coopers to Cashmores at Newport, as it was rumoured that the limited workforce here found the task more demanding than anticipated.
The date is 23rd. Auguust, 1964.
