5063 1963-10-29 Worcester Shrub Hill
This nameplate had originally been caried for a year or so by little " Dukedog " 3208 , built in 1936 , and which later became 9008 but was transferred to newly built " Castle 5063 in 1937 in company with a dozen or so other " Earl " nameplates removed from " Dukedogs " following objections from a number of the noble Gentlemen concerned who did not like their names appearing on what they considered to be an inappropriate design of locomotive !
It was necessary for Swindon to increase the radius of the bottom of the backing plates on those which had been borne by the " Dukedogs " in order for them to fit the larger radius of the " Castle " splashers , and this close up image shows very clearly that the nameplate itself is of smaller radius than the " Castle's " splasher to which it is affixed , a feature common to all such plates actually carried by the little " Dukedogs " .
