1964 was the final year for the few remaining " Castle " still in service and the handful which were left could often be seen on Birmingham to the West Country Summer Saturday workings as they passed through Gloucester.
In this view one of the four or so still working, 7019 "Fowey Castle" climbs up past Tuffley Junction having called at Gloucester Eastgate, on the former Midland line, and heads to Bristol Temple Meads, where it will come off this working to return later that same day, the date being 22nd. August, 1964.
I had photographed 7019 in Swindon Works "A" Shop on 8th. April that year and it must have been the last of its class to have been overhauled there.
The following year these Summer Saturday workings were in the hands of Midland Region " Britannia's.
" Fowey Castle's " working on this date , Saturday the 22nd. August of 1964 and during that year's Summer Services is the 6.55.a.m. from Wolverhampton to Penzance , which 7019 will work to Bristol Temple Meads before returning back to Wolverhampton later that same afternoon with an extra from the North Devon coast.
One of the few remaining " Castles " in service at Oxley shed 7019 had earlier been through Swindon Works in advance of the Summer Timetable operational date , probably the last of her class in regular B.R.service to be overhauled at that Works .
Whilst at Bristol this day 7019 will be turned , watered and oiled at Barrow Road shed , both Western Region sheds by this date having been closed to steam , but Barrrow Road was itself in a run down state with few facilities now remaining available for such visiting locomotives on these workings.
