7024 1962-08 Wolverhampton Low Level
No.7024 Powis Castle in August 1962 departing with an Up express. It was transferred from Old Oak Common to Stafford Road in August 1961 and then to Oxley in September 1963 before withdrawal in 1965. The condition of the Hawksworth coach leaves a lot to be desired. Through trains from Birkenhead usually had an engine change and were strengthened with additional coaches and a Restaurant Car at Wolverhampton, with the opposite procedure taking place in Down direction.
7024 was to be one of the ten " Castles " allocated to Wolverhampton's Oxley Depot in 1964 following its move across from Stafford Road when that Depot closed in September of 1963 , the engine having earlier gone to Stafford Road in September of 1961 from Old Oak Common from where it had been allocated from new in 1949.
At Oxley in 1964 " Powis Castle " was used on heavy express parcels workings to London as well as on the Cross Country Inter Regional passenger turns to Southern Region territory , the engines on those duties invariably working to Oxford.
Additional 1964 Summer Services holiday traffic from the West Midlands to and back from the West of England also saw the Oxley " Castles " working on Saturdays down to Bristol Temple Meads , those engines returning later the same afternoon or evening following a quick turn round on Bristol's Barrow Road Depot , with Bath Road and St. Philip's Marsh Depots by then both closed.
7024 survived until February of 1965 in company with 5063 , 7011 , 7019 and 7023 , the other five "Castles "at Oxley having been withdrawn in late 1964 following the end of the 1964 Summer Services .
In 1965 it fell to a handful of "Britannias " drafted in to Oxley to handle such additional Summer traffic to and from Bristol , the four " Castles " remaining in service at Gloucester by then being in a run down condition and rostered to local stopping services and freight duties only , with three of the four being condemned in June of that year .
