5069 1960s nameplate
One of Laira shed's finest in the mid ' fifties and early' sixties 5069 , " Isambard Kingdom Brunel " was instantly recognisable to the local enthusiasts by virtue of this impressive nameplate , the second design carried by the engine during its lifetime.
A photograph of 5069 on page 110 of Laurence Waters splendid new book " Castles , the final years 1954 - 1965 " shows the engine partially dismantled at Swindon but bearing what appears to read a chalked " Engine not Scrap " on the left hand cabside , and one wonders what plans there may have been for 5069 to be spared the cutters' torches.
In the event , however , and unfortunately for us all , 5069 did not survive into preservation , sad to say.
