4086 1960-11-16 Bristol Patchway
A fine study of 4086 , " Builth Castle " storming up from the Severn Tunnel at Patchway , Paddington bound with the up " Red Dragon " from Cardiff . One of Plymouth Laira's stalwarts for many years in the ' fifties 4086 left her Westcountry home for 82C., (Swindon) in early 1957 , from there spending time at Reading and at Cardiff Canton , and 4086 will have been at Canton at the date of this photograph .
Judging by the tender Canton's shed staff have given the fireman a decent load of coal and 4086 will doubtless turn and be watered at Ranelagh yard after arrival at Paddington , without having to go out to Old Oak Common , as was the custom with engines working up from South Wales and the Birmingham line as well.
Even the early " Castles " survived well into the ' sixties , enhanced by improved draughting , mechanical lubricators and in many cases double chimneys.
