4082 1964-10-27 Gloucester Barnwood
Peter Kerslake:'4082' Windsor Castle' photographed by myself at the former LMR shed at Gloucester Barnwood on the 27th. October, 1964. Closed to steam in May 1964 , Barnwood was thereafter used to hold condemned locomotives on their way to the South Wales scrapyards , its own diminishing steam allocation being transferred over to Gloucester Horton Road. 4082' Windsor Castle' was, of course, actually 7013' Bristol Castle' the two locomotives exchanging identities following the death of King George VI and the unavailability of the real 4082 to haul the funeral train. This exchange of identities explains why a locomotive with the number of one of the first batch of'Castle's" survived until 1964! 4082 had been withdrawn from Gloucester Horton Road a few weeks previous to my photograph."
