The '431' board attached to the loco is the summer Saturday train reporting number- in this case the 11.30am Waterloo - Bournemouth - not the loco diagram number. This was an Eastleigh loco diagram (steam diagram 251 or 252 as I recall). After some Cromptons (cl. 33) became allocated to Eastleigh, I believe from about 1962 they frequently worked the train depicted in the no train heating summer timetable period (electric heating only on the diesel vs. steam heated only coaching stock). It reverted to an Eastleigh steam diagram for the winter timetable.
