1101 1956-07 Swansea Docks

Ex-Great Western Railway Collett '1101' class 0-4-0 Tank No. 1101. Built by Avonside Engine Co. of Bristol in June 1926 and withdrawn in Nov. 1959. Just six of these diminutive (and uncharacteristically ugly for the GWR) short wheelbase tanks were built in 1926 for dock and harbour use where tight curves precluded other types from operating as seen here at Swansea Docks in July 1956. I think that the very low number produced is quite surprising considering the number of possible locations on the GWR system that might have found them useful, purhaps it was because they were 'bought in' from the Avonside locomotive company.

Keith Morris adds "I suspect the reason they were not perpetuated was the weight - at 38 tons they were Route restricted RED, compared to the existing SHT and P&M locos at 26-28 tons which were Yellow route restricted or unrestricted "
