D828 1967-08-21 Saltash

"Peter Kerslake says "Taken from the road bridge, 'Warship' class D828 "Magnificent" heads cautiously over Mr. Brunel's masterpiece here at Saltash with a Cornish bound freight, above the rooftops and steeply hilled Saltash below. The River Tamar looks at a low level in this view , and is tidal here at its estuary with Plymouth Sound a mile or so "downstream" to the right. Naval warships using the dockyard at Devonport which lies down river to the right of this view have sufficient clearance to pass below the bridge at this location, even at high tide, in order to to gain access to the Bull Point Naval Armament Depot further up the Tamar, safely situated well away from the Dockyard, with its stores of missiles, torpedoes and the like all stored underground on the far hillside".

And "Further to my previous notes I add that this fine view shows the central pillar of the bridge, its position mid river has it sitting on a conveniently located rock base enabling it to be the starting point for the bridge construction.
D828 "Magnificent " enterd service at Plymouth's Laira depot from construction at Swindon in October of 1960 , later spending time at Newton Abbot before being condemned in late August of 1971.
Normandy Way at the bottom of this view was the route by which many hundreds of American marines marched down to the slipways adjacent to the bridge on their way to Normandy during the last war, their departure by way of U.S.A. vessels from those slipways remembered today by a splendid memorial and plaques affixed to the bridge pillars on this side of the river."
