D822 1961-08 Plymouth
A good view of the extent of North Road station with its three double slips on the Down side and carriage sidings on the Up side. Note also the newly erected tall floodlight. Warship No. D822 Hercules departs northwards with the Up Cornishman in August 1961. The green livery of the Warships was relieved only by the grey lining band on the side and the front end looks very uninspiring. In the background, the 154 feet high Rail House is under construction and as usual there is a 45xx and another Warship awaiting departure eastwards.Pictured from the road bridge to the east of Plymouth North Road station , as it was known in past days , this view is dominated by the massive eyesore under construction when it was thought that the Western Region headquarters would be here , although in the event they were located at Swindon , thus making this building obsolete , and it today remains only partially occupied with massives of spare floor space available . North Road East signal box here on the right has now been demolished , as has the water tower on the left , of course, but the little lane on the left , a favoured spot for the past sixty years and more, still provides an excellent viewing place when there's a Steam Special about
