D806 1964 Saltash

D806 on the 12.30 Penzance-Kensington MilkThis afternoon milk train will have already collected additional fully loaded milk tank wagons as it has run up through Cornwall from Penzance , and ther will be more awaiting it , particularly at Totnes , where there was an important creamery adjacent to Totnes station, before it reaches its destination at Kensington. The new road bridge is on the right , and below the piers of the rail bridge , over on the Saltash waterfront and in front of the white painted building , is the slipway from where the little car ferry used to berth from its crossing of the Tamar here. It was a much smaller version than its big brother further down river at Torpoint , which still operates today albeit with newer and much larger vessels. The ferry here at Saltash ceased to operate when the new road bridge came into use , but the slipways on each side of the river still remain there today. Saltash station lies at the end of the last bridge section , just to the right of the imposing Chapel visible here . In the earlier days of steam this working would have always been double headed from Plymouth over the South Devon banks to Newton Abbot due to its heavy load , and it was a favourite for a County working , that class being renowned for their climbing abilities.
