On 9 February 1974 821 was moved from Didcot to Reading Gas Works where it was photographed being returned to maroon livery from a passing train. This was not the best location for restoration because it was outside with no power supply and water came from the nearby River Thames and the locomotive was subject to attention from local youths on numerous occasions. It was not until 1977 that she moved to Swindon Works.
