D805 1960s Saltash
A splendid view on a lovely sunny afternoon as Benbow runs along the Cornish side of the River Tamar and heads down from Saltash into the Duchy of Cornwall with what looks like a relief to the Cornish Riviera from Paddington. The Royal Naval warship seen beyond the nearest span of the Royal Albert bridge is alongside the jetty at the Naval Armament Depot at Bull Point where torpedoes and shells and the like for the warships are stored underground in the facility built deep into the hillside. Live ammunition would not be taken on board by the ships or off loaded here but would be taken by barge out into Plymouth Sound for loading away from the City for safety reasons.
