Westcountry milk for Kensington Depot and for London in this splendid shot here at Newton Abbot as D869 Zest has the daily milk working from St. Erth in West Cornwall heading eastwards after having picked up additional loaded tank wagons as it progressed through Cornwall and West Devon bound for the Capital. These milk workings were more demanding than one would realise , the weight of the fully loaded tank wagons invariably requiring a pilot engine from Plymouth over the South Devon banks to here at Newton Abbot , but whether a pilot engine has already been detached here at Newton Abbot this day cannot be determined. In earlier years the Shedmaster at Laira would often favour a County as train engine for the Milk , but it was always Double Headed as mentiond above.
