6018 1963-04-28 Iver

SLS Special running without front numberplate and painted bufferbeam number. This is not the 'King Commemorative Railtour' of November 1962 using 6018 as this carried a different headboard.

Peter Kerslake explains "One of the seven Kings allocated to Cardiff Canton in 1959/1960 it remained there until returning to Old Oak Common in June 1962. King Henry VI, despite undergoing a Heavy General Overhaul at Swindon as late as early 1962 was withdrawn from service in December of that year.
It was not, however, sent for scrapping but underwent a further overhaul at Swindon when plans for its sale to Butlins were revealed, but in the event such a sale fell through.
6018 was retained at Swindon and was used to work the Stephenson Locomotive Society "Farewell to the Kings" Special running from Birmingham to Swindon and back.
Rumours of 6018 being given the identity of 6000 King George V were unfounded and it was finally cut up at Swindon in October 1963."
