6003 1929 Laira Plymouth

6003 1929 Laira Plymouth

GWR King class 4-6-0 No 6003 King George IV at Laira shed in c1929. It was built in July 1927 and spent over thirty years allocated to Old Oak Common.

Peter Kerslake adds "Laira's coaling stage is out of shot on the extreme left of this view, with the main lines to and from Plymouth station on the embankment, and Laira Green School is prominent high in the background, still there and still Laira Green School today !
The smooth and rounded original design of casing over the inside valve chest shows up well in this view, and although it looks nice would have been a slippery trap for unwary firemen and shed staff, specially when wet or icy, and was replaced in later years by a squared version, complete with a patterned edge plate which provided a more secure foothold.
Note the original design of brass cover on the leading bogie axlebox, later changed to a more pleasing rounded syle, also in brass."
